Best Ever Hot Cocoa
It’s finally December and the chill is starting to fill the air here in Virginia. I am secretly hoping that we get a lot of snow this year because I am so excited to take Elise out in the snow for her first time! We hardly got any snow last year so she didn’t get to experience the fun. Growing up in Upstate New York, my winters always provided snowfall. I have fond memories of playing out in the backyard with my siblings and neighbors for what seemed like hours whenever we received measurable snow. When we would come inside from playing(which was usually when our gloves or socks were soaked and we needed a break) we would almost always have hot cocoa. Now it was typically the kind from a box it was nonetheless delicious and has become a nostalgic memory of childhood whenever we make the same hot cocoa for our son on a cold day.
This year I decided to try something a little different and make my own homemade hot cocoa. I don’t know if it is the new home or that I am staying home now (maybe it’s a little of both) but I love spending my time in the kitchen trying new things. I set up my Rae Dunn display for Christmas and found this cute Hot Cocoa sign from Michaels and it got me thinking…why don’t I make my own hot cocoa?! I searched the internet for recipes and there were many to choose from but I ultimately decided to come up with my own variation up and let me tell you it was a hit!!
If rich and decadent is your thing then this hot cocoa is for you. It is super and I mean super easy to make! I had some premade snowflake marshmallows, peppermint candy canes, and whipped cream for the toppings. I went for the peppermint snowflake marshmallow and I even added a little cinnamon to mine for an extra kick. Mike and the kids had theirs with whipped cream and Christmas sprinkles.
Seriously after trying this recipe and finding out how easy this is to make, I don’t see us ever going back to the packet hot cocoa again. This is straight out of cafe type of hot cocoa! We waited all day to drink this and the aroma was killing us, even I was getting anxious! So last night we waited to drink it until The Great Christmas Light Fight on ABC came on which has become a family tradition ever since our son was 3 years old. We love picking out our favorite houses and seeing if they won. I think we will be adding this homemade hot cocoa to our tradition of watching this show every year now!
