Healthy Snack Plan
I don’t know about you but my kids are always asking about snacks. In fact this morning the first thing Elise said when I got her from her room was “I have snack?” Girl, it is 8:00 am, no you can not have a snack! With summer break approaching in less than 10 days, I know I need to come up with a master plan for snacks to make sure they are 1. healthy and 2. manageable so my kids aren’t asking me about snacks 500 times a day!
This past October at the Mom’s Meet Blogging Conference I sat in on a discussion with a nutritionist for the Chicago Cubs and she had a really awesome idea that I am adapting this summer. She said to create a weekly snack menu and post it to the fridge or anywhere else the kids can see it and on it have a list of snacks for the week then switch out the snacks every week! Genious!! This helps eliminate your kids begging for snacks or constantly saying “I don’t know what to have for a snack” plus it also helps you plan the snacks for the week. It’s a win-win!!
Each week I will have a list of the snacks available for the week and the time that they can have their snacks. Since Elise is much younger than Xander I will have pictures by the words for her to see. I will have two or three healthy snack options for the kids to choose from. They may choose any of the options at the two designated snack times during the day. I love that this also keeps the routine that they have during school so that they aren’t loosing too much of that structure over the summer break.
My kids love yogurt So I see that being on the list pretty much every week. Both Elise and Xander are really into Happy Family Yogurt these days. We discovered them at Target when I was shopping and needing to run errands but needed a quick snack and wanted something healthy for the kids so I found the Happy Tot Yogurt Pouches. I Love that they are made with whole milk with vitamin D, no added sweeteners, and have probiotics too! They are also Non- GMO and USDA Organic which is awesome in my book! A happy belly makes this Mama Happy!
Another one of my kid’s recent favorites is good old apples and peanut butter. I plan to portion out little cups of peanut butter for them to dip the apples in and have them easily accessible on the weeks that we have that snack.
I will try my best to keep the snacks as healthy as possible. We enjoy walking into town to get ice cream and s’mores with our neighbors over the summer pretty much every weekend so If I can keep the snacks at home healthy I’ll feel less guilty about indulging in summer treats later on!
